Bio
Before becoming a teacher, I was a health inspector and then a hazardous waste inspector. My job was not to just tell people what to do, my job was to help them understand how and why the regulations are important to everyone. As a teacher my philosophy is the break down the information, explain each part, and emphasize why the information is important to a student. I can teach all about the chemistry of the hole in the ozone layer, ozone depleting products and the effects. But the most important lesson is that everyone should protect themselves from the sun. So while I am explaining the science, I'm asking a lot of questions about the students to find where their connection is to the materials. Do you wear sunscreen and or sunglasses? Have you had a sunburn? Do you know anyone who has had skin cancer? Using the students' responses, I tie it in with the chemistry and the products. Finally, we end on what actions students can take to protect themselves and the planet.
Teacher Specialization
I have taught all areas of science, including Advanced Placement Environmental Science. I have taught middle and high school students of all levels. I graded AP Environmental Science exams, taught an ACT prep camp for three summers and worked at the Greensboro Science Center teaching elementary school students. I have taught online for four years and I have my National Virtual Teachers Association Certification. I have a Bachelor of Science in biology, and I continue to educate myself on advancements in education and AI.
