Bio

My name is Kia Joyce. I have been an educator for 8 years in the classroom in Massachusetts and Florida. I believe in the student-centered approach and breaking down challenging concepts into bite-size pieces that the learner can connect to information they already are familiar with. Every learner is unique and it is the job of the educator to adapt the lesson to meet each learner's individual needs. I want to inspire the love for learning and to teach learners to be critical thinkers; to question why something is the way that it is to truly gain a deep understanding of the concept instead of just memorizing procedures. I have worked as a lead teacher in classrooms of 25+ students, and as a Math specialist where I was able to meet with students in small groups to dive deep into challenging concepts. I noticed such a difference when students are able to move at their own pace and have meaningful conversations about difficult topics. I believe in positive, immediate feedback.

Teacher Specialization

I have taught as the Lead Math and Science teacher in multiple classroom settings for 8 years, including public, charter, and remote classrooms. I have also been the Math Specialist for Grades 4-6. All settings have included students with IEPs and 504 Plans. I also have 8 years of experience as a small group and one-to-one tutor, as well as a running coach. Finally, I have developed several resources for teachers to use in their classrooms in small groups.
