Hi! I'm Ms. Perfilio, your go-to tutor for reading, writing, and spelling support! I'm a teacher, dyslexia specialist, and adjunct instructor with over 25 years of teaching experience. I love to read, listen to audiobooks, go to the beach, exercise, go on vacations (I've been on 10 cruises), and spend time with my huband and two children. I went into education because I've always enjoyed working with children of all ages. Literacy and language are topics that I enjoy learning about, and it's become my passion to help other people strengthen these skills. My Philosophy: I believe most students learn to read best through a phonics-based approach. When students become stronger decoders, reading becomes more automatic and fluent, and that fluency is what opens the door to true comprehension. I bring this approach to life in a positive, practical way that students respond to and enjoy, helping them build both skill and confidence as readers.

I have taught and tutored people of all ages, including other teachers, virtually and in-person, for over 25 years. I bring a deep well of experience and a genuine passion for helping students succeed at every stage of their learning journey. I specialize in teaching students using Orton-Gillingham, a research-based phonics and decoding approach aligned with the Science of Reading, designed for students with dyslexia and other reading challenges. Older readers who do not have a strong phonics foundation can also be taught using this approach, along with vocabulary and morphology. While reading and language are my true passions, I'm also equipped to tutor all elementary subjects. Degrees: BA in English, SUNY Albany, MS Ed in Special Education, CUNY Queens.
