Bio
Hi, I’m Mrs. Hicks! I’ve been teaching high school English for 16 years and hold master’s degrees in Secondary English and Adolescent Psychology. My career began as a social worker and psychologist, giving me insight into how teens learn and thrive. I have experience working with students with ADD/ADHD, autism, and behavior disorders, and I enjoy helping them build confidence through strategies that work. I currently serve as the Lead Teacher for 11th and 12th grade and as English Department Chair, where I design curriculum and mentor colleagues. My teaching philosophy is rooted in encouragement, creativity, and connection—I believe students thrive when supported and challenged. My style blends structure, humor, and patience, making learning engaging and relatable while preparing students for future success.
Teacher Specialization
I specialize in Secondary English and have 16 years of experience teaching literature, writing, and grammar. For the past three years, I’ve taught in a virtual setting, where I’ve developed creative ways to engage students online. My first experience with virtual teaching came during COVID, and I discovered how much I enjoy adapting lessons to a digital classroom. I also spent four years teaching homebound students asynchronously through the Schoology platform, designing lessons that were flexible yet structured enough to keep students on track. These experiences have given me a strong background in supporting learners in both live and independent online environments, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed.
