Bio
Hello! I'm Shelby Sooy-Groves, a highly-qualified teacher from Northeast Ohio who is passionate about helping students grow as learners and individuals. I truly enjoy building connections with my students and taking the time to learn about their passions and goals! Each child is unique, and through learning about what they value the most, I can create lessons that help students make connections between content and their day-to-day lives. I work hard to create a comfortable and engaging learning environment for all types of learners. Activities are tailored to each student's strengths and needs to ensure lessons are both engaging and enriching while making sure students feel safe and heard. All students deserve individualized support to reach their highest potential in school and in life. Outside of teaching, I value time with family and friends and enjoy baking, crafting, and reading. I am excited to work with you and your student to make learning meaningful, tangible, and engaging!
Teacher Specialization
I hold a Bachelor's and Master's in English and a 7-12 Integrated Language Arts teaching certificate. I also have 8 years of classroom experience - 6 years in person and 2 years virtual - including experience teaching gifted and special education students, as well as teaching test prep courses (ACT and SAT). Throughout my career I've worked with and developed lessons for exceptional learners, focusing on differentiating lessons to meet individual student needs in reading, writing, and composition. Beyond English education, I have 4 years of experience in test prep, specifically for the ACT and SAT tests. I have the knowledge to help students prepare for these tests, as well as the experience to help students develop healthy studying and test taking habits. I also mentor high school students to help them develop a positive relationship with learning through healthy school habits, promoting SEL skills, and goal setting.
