Bio
Welcome! I am excited to partner with you in learning and growing toward your goals! I seek to meet students where they are at, setting goals to reach toward where they need to be, and providing scaffolding or tools to get them there. I engage students by asking questions and by accessing prior knowledge. “Growth mindset” and “turtle steps forward” are part of my philosophy. Students are whole beings. Their emotional needs and their mindsets contribute to their academic growth, so I notice and address these aspects. When work is approached with curiosity and creativity, not just pressure and performance, students experience a richer learning that takes root and produces. Students need to feel safe and cared for. I aim to create that environment by treating each child with kindness and respect. I enjoy writing (currently on my second novel), reading, baking, yoga and hiking. Recently, I took a nine-month life coaching course.
Teacher Specialization
I have spent the past twenty plus years working with children, first home schooling my own two children, then transitioning to teaching in schools. I have a BA in English, and a professional teacher’s license in English 6-12 with an ESL endorsement. (In Colorado, I took the PLACE test which certified me to teach Elementary as well.) I have taught children at every grade level, with recent focus on high school English, pull-out ESL classes, and remedial reading classes in charter schools in Nashville and Phoenix. However, in earlier years in Colorado, I taught literature, writing, Latin, logic, US history, World History, state history, speech, and other electives.
