Bio

Hi and Bonjour! I grew up in a bicultural family of Belgian and American cultural values so yes I speak French but my first language is English. My interests center on two countries, the United Kingdom and Egypt (ancient and modern). I have taught in California, Alaska and Washington. Tutoring is a chance to find the optimum way of learning for an individual at their own pace. I want to provide different ways of meeting academic challenges for students to have life-long. Growth and academic excellence can be achieved by giving students the space to learn their own unique way which I am committed to facilitating. I build positive and meaningful relationships with students by letting them know I respect them for who they are by being interested in their lives. A supportive and learning environment is one where their thoughts and individual learning styles are celebrated. I will provide meaningful feedback by providing a scaffolded approach to mastering a concept.

Teacher Specialization

I earned a Journalism degree in 1993 and then went to graduate school to become an elementary teacher as I became disillusioned with the world of sensationalistic journalism. I earned my kindergarten to 8th grade teaching credential in 1995. My journalism background has allowed me to teach contracted high school English as well as kindergarten to 3rd grade. The rest of my experience was as a substitute. In 2007, I earned a Master's of Education focusing on at-risk students. My virtual teaching experience began during the COVID pandemic in 2020 where I pivoted to using Zoom to teach high school English class students. I have a math learning disability. During the 1970s and 80s, I never received the special education I should have but did I let that stop me from being a success? No! I used my strengths in reading and writing, my best learning styles and my self determination to earn my special education endorsement in 2022. Students with autism and ADHD are my specialties.
