Bio

Hello! My name is Chris McBride and I love helping people learn and enjoy math. I believe people learn best when they’re relaxed and enjoying the process. Mistakes aren’t setbacks—they’re how we learn. As your tutor, I’ll help you embrace them, learn from them, and get back on track with confidence. I love breaking down “math-speak” into plain English and connecting new ideas to what you already understand. In a busy classroom, it’s easy to miss key concepts—working one-on-one lets us slow down, ask questions, and get to those “why didn’t they just say that?” moments. I’m Chris McBride—though my students have also called me “Mr. McElmo” and “Chrismas,” which I take as a good sign they feel at ease. I’ve worked in engineering and lived across the U.S.; helping students conquer math is the most rewarding work I’ve found.

Teacher Specialization

I began tutoring when a friend asked for help for his daughter--I gave it a try and had a lot of fun helping her untangle math. I have taught math in public schools for 6 years; 5 years as an interventionist with kids in grades 5-8 and last year as a conventional classroom teacher in grades 9-12. When Covid hit, I spent 1-1/2 years teaching in-person and online students. I have a degree in mechanical engineering from Oregon State University and spent 15 years in industry, mostly in aerospace. I received my teacher’s certificate in math, grades 6-12, last year (2025) in the State of Maine. I now live in Washington state with my family and pup, Zippy.
