Bio
Tutoring is all about helping you to master the material and gain the confidence to “know that you know it.” Even though I am now a retired educator, I still have a passion for providing clear, accurate explanations about science to students. My favorite topic in all of science is Stoichiometry because it is so central to what I call "Chemistry Math." Chemistry Math can be really challenging because you have to understand both the mathematical calculations and the scientific concepts behind them. This is where my expertise comes in as a science tutor - I can explain both concepts and calculations, and then help you internalize the relationships between these. I also believe that all students can learn and will be successful if they are provided the right supports. As a former science teacher, I recognize that every student is an individual. I will adapt my tutoring techniques to meet your learning needs.
Teacher Specialization
I have a bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Rice University and a master's degree in Secondary Science Education from the University of Houston. I have taught high school and middle school science with a primary focus on Pre-AP Chemistry and Medical Microbiology. After teaching for 8 years, I became the K-12 Science Curriculum Coordinator for a school district. In that role, I supervised and trained science teachers across all grade levels. Later, I trained and certified new teachers across a wide variety of grade levels and subject areas. Throughout all of these roles, I used my expertise in science to help students be successful, whether during whole-class instruction, small group tutoring sessions, training teachers on methods to teach science, or reviewing science content knowledge 1-on-1 with teacher candidates to help them pass their certification exams. This has been the highlight of my career - seeing somebody's face light up when they finally understand something!
