Bio
Hello! My name is Yolanda. I am a retired educator. I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a teacher. From my very first day in the classroom, I dedicated myself to creating environments where students feel valued, understood, and empowered to achieve their full potential. Throughout my career, I have been passionate about making a difference in the lives of my students. My teaching philosophy is "Kids don't care what you know until they know that you care." I take great pride in building strong relationships with my students, creating a safe and supportive space for learning. With years of experience not just in the classroom, but also in leadership roles such as SIT Team Chair and Grade Level Facilitator. I have been honored with Teacher of the Year awards three times, a recognition I value deeply because it reflects my commitment to nurturing both student success and a positive school culture.
Teacher Specialization
My path to teaching began at Winston-Salem State University, where I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish. I dedicated 30 years to teaching and retired in 2023. I am certified to teach grades K–6 and spent my career working primarily with younger learners, including 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades. Throughout my career, I have served as a tutor in a variety of settings—after-school programs, summer enrichment programs, and private tutoring. I have worked with students in grades 1–4 and specialize in supporting learners who need additional help in reading and language arts. I also have extensive experience providing test-preparation sessions and helping students build confidence and foundational skills.
