Bio
Students learn best when they feel safe and are encouraged to take risks. I like to provide students with something specific they have done well in the lesson as well as something useful to have them improve upon for our next lesson. My approach is to first build up a relationship to get to know the students. My goals are to help students develop at their own pace, build self-confidence, and take pride. I will create an atmosphere of community (e.g., check-ins for small groups to see how everyone's day is going), where everyone is included and welcomed. A bit about me is I have two girls (grown and moved away) and two boys. I enjoy watching my boys' sporting events (football, basketball, and baseball), shopping, and playing with our Goldendoodle. Some interesting facts about me are that I have an eclectic taste in music, I've traveled to many states in the US (by car mostly), and I love DOGS! I chose to become a tutor because I would like to still work with students in a new capacity.
Teacher Specialization
Nearly all of my 25 years of experience has been in a traditional setting teaching middle school (grades 6-8). About halfway through my career I switched from teaching ELA to Math! I also have experience teaching online in a virtual setting. This began in March of 2020 through approximately February of 2021 (COVID), and then in a hybrid setting through the end of the 2020-2021 school year. Although my certification allows me to teach K-8 ELA, Math, and Social Studies, I would like to start tutoring in K-8 ELA and see where it takes me. I am looking most forward to supporting students in the science of reading and working with students on their written expression, technical composition, and grammatical studies.
