Bio

Hello, my name is Brenda L. Brewer. I am a Texas Certified Educator. I reside in Houston, Texas and have been a resident for many years. I'm a Graphic and Web Designer, I'm learning to play the piano, and I like playing chess, especially, against the computer. My philosophy for teaching is to interact with my students on a regular basis. I ask my students open-ended questions and listen for their response. Open-ended questions promote independent thinking. The display of these critical thinking skills can help me to understand what my student's perspective is, what motivates them, and what interest them. With this feedback, I can design lessons in ways that can encourage maximum student understanding. Also, with this data I can better understand how I may improve my interactions with my students. But, most important to me is that my students feel safe in a nurturing environment.

Teacher Specialization

I have worked in education since the early 90s. I began as a Teacher Aide. I worked in the traditional and the Montessori settings. I was told that I was a "natural" teacher and was offered a pathway to the University of Houston, a great teaching university. At the University of Houston, I gained a Bachelor of Science degree, cum laude. I passed the State Board test and began teaching with certifications in Early Childhood, Self-Contained 1-8 grade, and Mathematics 1-8 grade. Most of my years of experience have been with Pre-K and Kindergarten students and 1st through 5th grade students. Most recently, I worked online teaching ESL elementary students in Hutong, China via Skype. I contracted with VIPkids for a few years. The students there learned new vocabulary words, reviewed old ones, dragged and dropped pictures, and read stories aloud to me. I'm happy to say that it was a great experience. I look forward to my work experience with K12!
