Bio
My name is Christina Purnell, and I live in the beautiful state of Pennsylvania with my husband and two children. I believe that every student has the ability to learn if the instruction is adaptive to the needs of the student. Building rapport with the student and their family is key to the success of the tutoring. My goals of tutoring are to provide the student the instruction needed to become a confident learner who can apply their knowledge tinto their everyday lives. In order for a student to be successful, they have to feel comfortable working with the tutor. This can occur by creating a safe environment where the student is supported and encouraged by both the tutor and fellow students. With twenty-seven years of teaching experience and nine years teaching online, I have the expertise to help motivate a student for success in the content through explicit instruction as well as engaging supplemental practice.
Teacher Specialization
As a veteran teacher, I have Bachelor Degrees in both elementary education (K-6) and music as well as a Masters in Reading K-12. During my 27 years of teaching I have served as a classroom teacher in fourth and fifth grades. I have been a reading interventionist for the past 18 years both in brick and mortar as well as a cyber school teacher for the past nine years. During this time I have held the position of an elementary literacy coach, modeling lessons for teachers, providing professional development, and analyzing reading data to present to senior leadership. I have supported students in reading from kindergarten through sixth grade. My students have ranged from those diagnosed with dyslexia to those in the talented and gifted program. In addition to my small group reading instruction, I coteach with grade level teachers, have provided book club opportunities, and run several virtual STEM camps. I also have experience tutoring math and reading online.
