Bio
I believe students learn best when they feel safe with their instructor. I provide that environment by having friendly interactions with my students, learning their unique learning styles in order to explain concepts in a meaningful way, and helping them gain confidence through noting their strengths and building new skills. I aim to listen well to students so that I can discern what struggles they have with concepts and find new and different ways to help them understand and even enjoy academics. As a seasoned tutor, I can easily say that I really like all of my students. I think they can each sense the enjoyment I have when tutoring which makes them more eager for our sessions and ready to learn challenging material. They know I'll walk them through the steps and check in with their understanding and how they're feeling along the way.
Teacher Specialization
After graduating from the University of Texas with a degree in education, I moved to Long Beach, California where I taught math in a public middle school for 4 1/2 years and was awarded New Teacher of the Year in California. I met my husband in California and we moved overseas to Central Asia for about 20 years. While there, I homeschooled my seven children in all subjects through high school. I also facilitated and taught in a co-op for American kids living in our region. Once we moved back to Denton, Texas, I continued homeschooling my kids and began private tutoring. Over the past five years, I have tutored homeschooled kids as well as 1st-12th graders who attend private, public, and on-line schools. Most of my tutoring has been in-person but I also have several years of experience in virtual tutoring. I have loved working with elementary students in a variety of subjects and with middle school and high school students primarily in math and math test prep.
