Bio
Hello, my name is Rachel and I have been engaged in teaching and tutoring both online and in person for 10 years. I did a career change to education later in life when I finally decided to pursue my dream of living and working abroad. I used teaching English as my vehicle to achieving that dream and have remained in education every since! I have come to understand and cultivate that a good teacher must possess two key ingredients 1) deep knowledge of the subject being taught and 2) an ability to remember what it was like to be the learner so that your instruction is accessible to all students. Essentially a teacher needs to be able to meet a student where that student is at in their level of understanding of the material. This involves positive reinforcement, a steadfast belief in every child's ability to learn, patience, an ability to reframe and scaffold learning objectives and authenticity ( i.e. making mistakes is okay! It's natural and how we learn.)
Teacher Specialization
I have taught at public, private, and online schools while also doing private tutoring both in person and virtual. I specialize in math grades 3 - Algebra and reading grades K-12. My licenses are in Elementary Education, Reading Endorsement, ESOL and ESE (Special Education). The vast majority of my experience comes from working with students who are either tiered level 2/3, or have a 504/IEP. The thoughtful and continued cultivation of the attributes I listed in my bio, have allowed me to find great harmony in working with students who have academic challenges or learn differently.
